The aim of this project was to create a functional object with flowing organic form. The material choice was limited to sheet material and therefore production using digital fabrication processes was appropriate.
The outcome was a concept for a piece of street furniture on which the undulating surfaces had different functions. Although the outcome of this project is highly aesthetic, it’s form is actually driven by ergonomic parameters. The lower areas of the form are aimed at comfortable sitting height whilst the higher areas are aimed at an average ergonomic leaning height.
The model is comprised of 308 laser cut parts of MDF of which 153 are unique. This level of variation was only possible due to the digital fabrication method chosen. The photos show how, even though this piece is only made from sheet material, assembled the parts create the illusion of a flowing solid form.
